The "cycle of abuse" refers to the cyclical pattern in which abusive behavior may take place in a relationship. The calm and sometimes pleasant phases of the relationship often lead to a victim minimizing the abusive and/or violent behavior of the partner, which prevents the victim from leaving the abuser.
